Orthodontic FAQs
Choosing orthodontic treatment is a big decision, and it's natural to have questions along the way. Whether you're considering braces for your child, exploring clear aligners for yourself, or simply wondering what to expect during treatment, the team at Dr. Ruth Orthodontics is here to help.
If you don't see your question below, we'd be happy to answer it during your complimentary consultation.
When should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling your child's first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. At this stage, Dr. Ruth can identify developing bite problems, monitor jaw growth, and determine whether treatment may be beneficial now or later.
Keep in mind that an evaluation doesn't necessarily mean your child needs braces right away. In many cases, we'll simply monitor their growth until the timing is right.
Is orthodontic treatment just for kids and teens?
Not at all! Orthodontic treatment is for patients of all ages. Many adults choose to straighten their teeth to improve their oral health, boost their confidence, or correct bite issues that have bothered them for years.
Whether you're 8 or 68, it's never too late to enjoy the benefits of a healthy, beautiful smile.
How do I know if I need orthodontic treatment?
You may benefit from orthodontic treatment if you have:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- An overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite
- Difficulty chewing or biting comfortably
- Teeth that are difficult to clean because of their position
The best way to know for sure is to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Ruth. She'll evaluate your smile and recommend the treatment option that's right for you.
What treatment options does Dr. Ruth Orthodontics offer?
We offer personalized orthodontic solutions for children, teens, and adults, including:
- Traditional metal braces
- LightForce™ custom clear ceramic braces
- Clear aligners
- Early interceptive orthodontic treatment for children
During your consultation, Dr. Ruth will explain each option and help you choose the one that best fits your smile goals, lifestyle, and treatment needs.
Does orthodontic treatment hurt?
Most patients experience mild soreness for a few days after getting braces, starting a new set of aligners, or having an adjustment. This temporary pressure is a normal part of tooth movement.
Fortunately, any discomfort is usually mild and can often be managed with soft foods, warm saltwater rinses, and over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Every smile is different, so treatment time varies depending on your orthodontic needs and the type of treatment you choose.
Many patients complete treatment within 12 to 24 months, while some minor cases may finish sooner. During your consultation, Dr. Ruth will provide a personalized timeline based on your specific treatment plan.
How often will I need appointments?
Most patients visit Dr. Ruth Orthodontics every four to eight weeks so we can monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. Appointment frequency may vary depending on the type of treatment you're receiving.
Will I need to wear a retainer?
Yes. Retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment because they help keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or aligners are removed.
Without a retainer, teeth tend to shift over time. Dr. Ruth will provide detailed instructions on when and how to wear your retainer to protect your new smile.
Will orthodontic treatment affect my daily life?
Most patients adjust to treatment within a few days. You'll continue attending school or work, playing sports, participating in activities, and enjoying your normal routine.
If you wear braces, you'll need to avoid certain hard or sticky foods. If you choose clear aligners, you'll remove them before eating or drinking anything other than water.
Do I still need to visit my dentist during orthodontic treatment?
Absolutely. Regular dental cleanings and exams remain important while you're receiving orthodontic care.
Your general dentist and Dr. Ruth work together to help keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and keeping your regular dental appointments will help ensure the best possible results.
Does orthodontic treatment improve oral health?
Yes! Straight teeth are generally easier to brush and floss, making it easier to remove plaque and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Correcting bite problems can also improve chewing function, reduce uneven tooth wear, and contribute to long-term oral health.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
The cost of treatment depends on several factors, including the type of treatment you choose and the complexity of your case. During your complimentary consultation, we'll provide a customized treatment plan and explain all costs before treatment begins.
Dr. Ruth Orthodontics offers flexible financing options to help make orthodontic care affordable for individuals and families.
